I have been thinking and thinking about exactly what goes over a dog's back. Water? No, that is a duck, but water could go over a dog's back. Ticks and fleas? Yes, ticks and fleas can be found on a dog's back and on the dog's belly.
Or, I am being naive, and the expression is referring to SOMETHING ELSE?
You are right on all counts. At times she would follow this up with, "What goes around comes around." Don't you think she had a charming way of saying you reap what you sew?
Many times it seems to be the case that "What goes around comes around." The dog saying just puts into one on going organism a connection between top and bottom. Heads and tails. Up and down. Left and right.
